stephanopolous this morning at 8:00 here on abc7. developing news out of the east bay an alameda county sheriff's deputy is pooh recovering after being shot in oakland last night. the driver deputies pulled over wound up who shoot him has died. they stopped him last night. a passenger was arrested for drug possession. according to authorities the driver then drove away dragging a deputy behind the car. deputies opened fire hitting the driver several times. one deputy suffered a gunshot wound to his foot. the name has not been released. >> new details on a shooting earlier in san francisco. they are searching for a person that shot and killed a college student. it happened near bryant and 24th street. jacob vavidiezo was home

visiting family members. lilian kim has the latest. >> reporter: he is living the parents' worst nightmare. his son was shot and killed. he heard the gunshots and found his son lying on the ground. >> it hurts, it hurts. mom and dad it hurts. >> juab object was walking home with a friend after a night who out. a man got out of a car and asked him if he was in a gang and shot him several times. >> he only went for one person only. he shot him and shot him and took off. >> friends and family are shocked. they say he wasn't part of any gang and has no idea why anyone

would shoot him. >> he wasn't in gangs or anything. >> he was sophomore studying index in portland where he was wide receive on the football team. he played sports and graduated with honors. the teacher of the school to pay his respects. he brought a basketball in jacob's memory. in dish to be a great athlete and good student, he was a good person. >> he would sick up for the kids that were being picked on. making sure everybody had enough of whatever. >> there is no description of the gunman or the person who drove the car but neighbors describe the vehicle as a gray four-door sedan. anyone with information is urged to call the san francisco police department. a seven-year-old boy visiting an antioch home with

his family is recovering this morning after being shot. it happened on william reed drive. nick smith has the details. >> reporter: stable condition with non life-threatening injuries. >> reporter: i spoke with the lieutenant by phone. his department is investigating the shooting of a 7-year-old boy. >> at this point it appears that.... >> the 7-year-old were visitors to this home. >> several shots were fired and unfortunately the 7-year-old child was struck by the gunfire. >> they believe the gunman took a position here and fired at the unsuspecting crowd gathered below. >> at this point it appears he was not the intended target. >> boy was hit by a single bullet and was airlifted from this school yard to children's hospital in oakland. this is the most recent spat of gun violence to strike this

neighborhood. >> he was gunned down at this intersection and memorial now stands where he killed. >> he died in a hail of gunfire that broke out in the afternoon. police have not identified any suspects in the shooting and wouldn't say it was gang-related. it's the second homicide here this year. they are working to i.d. the shooter in both crimes. >> police are asking anyone with information about either shooting contact the antioch police department. nick smith, "abc 7 news". >> carolyn: new details this morning on the shooting outside a bart station that left a man dead. 18-year-old bennett was arrested for the shooting back in january. police police say it appears two rival groups ran into each other and the shooting started. the victim was a bystander and another bystander, a woman was reversed.

>> authorities have issued arrest warrants for two bay area men in connection with a gold theft. sheriff's deputies is looking for david johnson and 51-year-old scott bail liquor. they are believed to be the men that robbed the superior courthouse last week year. over a million dollars of gold and artifacts were taken last january. >> terry: chp is investigating why a truck ran off the road crashing into water near the mare island bridge. it happened on westbound highway 37 just outside vallejo. two men in a pickup were helped to shore by a ma than and woman fishing nearby. the driver was taken to the hospital with serious internal injuries. his passenger was not hurt. officers say the driver may have suffered a medical emergency while driving and the accident could have been much worse.

>> thankfully it wasn't a fatal collision. as you can see it became airborne and landed in water, they could have lost consciousness and drowned. >> carolyn: the truck was hauled out of the water. a pleasant hill woman is safe this morning after firefighters rescued her from a burning house. the fire started 4:30 yesterday afternoon on pleasant hill road. rising smoke can be seen for miles. the flames spread to the rest of the house. the red cross hemmed place the woman and two others in a temporary shelter. the white house says it is taking escalating tensions on the korean peninsula seriously. north korea says it is in a state of war against south korea. this follows kim jong un to put strategic rockets on standby.

there. heading toward merced boulevard and light rain in daly city. here is a live view looking down towards san francisco. grey clouds overhead but clearly the bay bridge, market street. temperatures right now in the 50s. so it's a much milder start because of the cloud cover. oakland, 57. san jose, 58. we also have another shot looking at the bay bridge and you see the clouds in the distance as well in san francisco. it's currently 57 in fairfield, 58 in los gatos. here is what you can expect today and rain and showers throughout the day. heaviest during the midday afternoon. thunderstorms are possible. it looks like an unsettled well week for the beginning of april. here is what is happening with the pacific satellite. we have an area of low pressure. the storm is heading right towards san francisco. that is moving inland today. as we look at the forecast model.

we are going to look for breaks in the rain during parts of the morning, even lunchtime hours. 5:00 we have heavy rain out toward sacramento and light showers right now. we could see a little bit of a break, cloud cover around 8:00 this morning, 9:00 you see the rain moving in. 11:00, more of the rain will be on the peninsula and vallejo, east bay and parts of information is may get a break. you see the rain moving in. heavier darker green is the heavier rain and 1:00, pretty wet all through the afternoon. then by the evening we get a little bit more of a break as the storm continues to move east. when it is all done we're still not talking a huge amount of rain, anywhere from tenth to half an inch and up to .3 in the higher elevations.

is new war memorial in the east bay to soldiers that lost their lives serving the country. yesterday, the city of san jose unveiled a memorial to the 142 native sons who lost their lives in the vietnam war. it marked the withdrawal of the troops in southeast asia. the monument was built entirely by volunteers located east of hp pavilion. >> it's a celebrity auction with a difference, a private collector is putting 250 man ui vipts up for sale. an unhappy marilyn monroe, she thinks she is going crazy and can't concentrate. there is an angry letter to linda and paul mccartney reflecting the bad feelings between them. it's expected to fetch between $40,000 and $60,000.

wet day today with live doppler 7hd the areas of green, light rain already falling over parts of the bay area. we'll see more of this throughout the day, heavy at times midday. here is a look north bay. heavier pockets of rain heading out towards highway 1 there and heading toward woodville, more rain on and off throughout the day. you are waking up to wet pavement this morning, low grey skies. a little patch had i fog. visibility not a huge problem but we are going to get breaks of rain throughout the morning. we'll start with temperatures in the upper 40s to mid 50s. this afternoon, thunderstorms are possible and the showers continue with us this evening. i'll show you the model of when you can expect the rain to hit your neighborhood. >> an early tradition will soon get underway in san francisco, annual sun price service draws a huge crowd of christians.

situated for the sunrise service that starts at 7:00 at mount davidson cross. >> new this morning, glide memorial church in san francisco's tenderloin is observing easter with free celebrations and free chicken dinners. easter sunrise service begins at 7:00 right after free coffee and donuts are served. two more musical celebrations take place in the sanctuary at 9:00 and 11:00. then a free fried chicken dinner will be served up by volunteers from 11:00 this morning until 2:30 in the afternoon. 85 people were remembered as the time they were pardoned by governor brown. one was a murderer after serving 15 years in prison. most of pardons signed by the govern involved people convicted of selling or possessing drugs. a spokesperson for governor

brown points out everyone has been out of prison for more than ten years and that has not been in trouble since. >> 38 brand-new police officers fresh out of the academy will be on the streets of oakland starting tomorrow morning. newly sworn officers will be out on patrol tomorrow with field training officers. they graduated last week from oakland's first police academy in five years. so far they have been meeting with community groups and learning about court mandated reforms. a new police academy started last monday with 51 new recruits. tomorrow is april 1st but police aren't fooling when police say they will be driving cracking down on drivers that text. national safety council estimates that 28% of all crashes every year involve

drivers involving the use of cellphones or texting. adult drivers are more likely to be distrack than teens. nearly half of all adults, 49% say they text and drive even though they know it's dangerous. the california condor is perched on the edge of recovery. two decades it was nearly extinct but a new threat that has emerged. in the assignment 7 report, news anchor dan ashley shows us what the single largest killer of condors is and how it can be stopped. the california condor is the largest land board in north america, an adult can weigh as much as 31 pounds and stand as tall as 41 feet with a wind span up to 10 feet. thousands of birds once called california home but ddt destroyed condor eggs and birds

almost disappeared. >> the population all-time low is 22 birds. >> kelly is with the wildlife society. for last 15 years they have been working to return the california condor to the wild. in 2011 the society bought 80 acres south of big sur to provide a safe home for the condors. birds come from captive breeding programs at the los angeles and san diego zoos. >> we ready captive bred condors that were raised in the zoos for the wild. >> it's a slow process. they don't lay eggs until five years old. if they live to 25 they may only lay six eggs during that time. there are 70 condors living on the big sur reserve. that is out of a total 404 birds across the southwest. the success is not without challenges. not every bird lives. >> it's hard to lose any bird

after spending all this time to get them established in the wild. because they live a long time and reproduce slowly, it's really hard on the population to lose an adult. in november, condor 318 died. they investigated. >> a bird came in with lead poisoning and ultimately died. there was a 22 round in the skull. >> he was not shot from the bullet. he ate it. >> in a u.c. lab, scientist has been studying the effects of lead on the condor. >> alarmingly they are exposed to harmful levels of lead on an annual basis. this they have warranted hospitalization for lead poisoning. >> it's the leading cause of

need a job. it's great to see them have this opportunity. >> even more jobs or the horizon. samsung received $7 million from incentives to build a new headquarters building on north first treat. and a semi conductor company is taking over a complex nearby. san jose's economic development director that companies are going on here. >> it's access to the technical work force, to the best public transportation in the silicon valley region and many amenities that come from being part of a big city. >> resurge answer won't be lost on college students studying science and math. local companies are starting to recognize they can keep tabs on quality and speed up development by manufacturing here. >> each of them making a decision on their projects, does it make sense for me and my product to be made here in

san carlos 55. we have another view for you from the east bay from emeryville looking out toward the bay bridge and also 59 in union city. so temperatures are a lot milder this morning. so we wake up to warmer temperatures. rain and showers and thundershowers most likely midday. here is the area of low pressure. counterclockwise flow headed right towards the bay area. it is somewhat warm system. we're not seeing very cold temperatures but here is how the rainfall plays out for today. latest models you notice we're getting a little bit of a break in some spots during some of the morning hours. then we see another band of rain heading towards the peninsula coast. lunchtime i know a lot of the folks heading out to lunch and sunday service and easter egg hunts it looks pretty wet.

maybe a bit of break in the east bay. then in the afternoon hours, you notice there are still showers off and on and we'll see a little bit of a break again starting around 9:00 at night. then the storm does started to move east overnight into tomorrow. we'll see leftover showers for monday morning commute. so when this is done by tonight, expect anywhere from a tenth to three-quarters of an inch in the north bay. darker blues central bay, tenth to half an inch. south bay possibly up to three-fourths of an inch, as well. 56 in pacifica. san francisco 62 and some 60s, mid-60s for novato, sonoma. also low 60s in berkeley, hayward and union city getting up to 65. so cooler today, as well. we're going to drop a few more degrees. 66 in concord. also for tonight, temperatures will be a little bit cooler. you'll find some 50s.
